RECOLLECTIONS AND PHOTOS OF
MILITARY LIFE AT
OKINAWA BEFORE JUNE 25, 1950

I finally arrived at Okinawa , for what was to be the greatest adventure of my life. I was assigned to the 31st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, soon to become the 91st SRS.

I lived at Tybase, a very nice building, and next to a nice mess hall. I worked in a dilapidated quonset hut once again as a camera technician, making installations in the RB-29's. Next to the camera repair building was an abandoned run down shack, in pretty sad shape. I fixed it up and pretty soon had a nice motorcycle repair shop.

Nearly every bike on the island was near junk status, so I was able to buy them for practically nothing, some actually given to me. I did have a nice 1946 Indian and a very nice 250 BSA. Several friends were riding with me on the parking ramp when we decided it would be a great idea to stand on the seat with no hands. A S/sgt whom I had just sold a Harley fell, hitting his head and killing him instantly. This substantially curtailed the trick riding.
